Effects of stocking density on growth performance, immune and stress responses in koi carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Koi (Linnaeus, 1758))
Authors
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the optimal stocking density in koi carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Koi). For this reason, 2400 juvenile koi (1.28 ± 0.11 g) were stocked at five levels of density (50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 fish per m3) and reared for 11 weeks and growth performance, survival rate, and hematological parameters were evaluated. There was no significant difference between first three treatments, in weight gain, SGR, FCR, mortality and hematological parameters (P>0.05). The minimum weight gain and maximum mortality were observed in treatments 5 and 4, respectively. There was no significant difference between treatments in RBC, WBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit and total protein (P>0.05). The highest amount of immunoglobulin, cortisol, and glucose were observed in treatments 5 and 4, respectively (P<0.05). Levels of lymphocytes were decreased, and levels of neutrophils were increased, by increasing stocking density from 50 to 300 fish/m3. The minimum levels of lymphocytes (73.27±0.12%) were measured in treatment 5. Maximum levels of cortisol (173.97±1.47 ng/ml), was observed in treatment 5 on day 7. According to the results, stocking density more than 150 fish per m3, leading to the growth reduction and incidence of stressful conditions in koi carp, so the optimal stocking density, was 150 fish per m3.

Immune Response to Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) of Koi and Koi × Red Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)
Koi herpesvirus (KHV), also known as Cyprinid herpes virus 3 (Cyprinid 3) is lethal disease in common carp and koi (Cyprinus carpio). Two different groups (KK and RK) were infected KHV by intraperitoneal injection. Fish for gene expression analysis were sampled at 0 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h and 72 h post infection (p.i). The results showed that two immune related gene, Interferons (INFs) ɑβ and Inte...

The aim of this study was to elevate the effect of stocking density of 20, 25 and 30 fish/m3 on some growth parameters and skin color of Koi fry (Cyprinus carpio) with the mean weight of 1.9 ±0.8 g (±SE) in the concrete ponds, earthen ponds, and fiberglass tanks with the total capacity of 1000 L for 45 days. The highest Final weight (12.38±1.9 g), Final length (10.05±1.06 cm), Body weight incre...
full textDetection of Koi Herpesvirus in Koi Cyprinus carpio in Taiwan
Mass mortality occurred in 2-year-old koi (fancy carp)Cyprinus carpio in Taiwan in 2002. Affected fish did not show any external signs except swollen gills. The consistent histological changes were observed in the gills; hyperplasia of epithelial cells, infiltration of eosinophilic granular cells and fusion of the secondary lamellae. Nega tively stained nucleocapsids were icosahedral and 112±1 ...
full textRisk factors for development of internal neoplasms in koi carp Cyprinus carpio koi.
Fish, like mammals, can be affected by neoplastic proliferations. As yet, there are only a very small number of studies reporting on the occurrence of tumours in koi carp Cyprinus carpio koi and only sporadic reports on the nature of the tumours or on risk factors associated with their development. Between 2008 and 2012, koi with abdominal swelling were examined pathologically: neoplastic lesio...
full textMelanocortin receptor 1 and black pigmentation in the Japanese ornamental carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Koi)
Colors and their patterns are fascinating phenotypes with great importance for fitness under natural conditions. For this reason and because pigmentation is associated with diseases, much research was devoted to study the genetics of pigmentation in animals. Considerable contribution to our understanding of color phenotypes was made by studies in domesticated animals that exhibit dazzling varia...
full textRoutine turning maneuvers of koi carp Cyprinus carpio koi: effects of turning rate on kinematics and hydrodynamics.
Spontaneous swimming behaviors of koi carp Cyprinus carpio koi were recorded using a video tracking system. Routine single-beat turns were selected from the recorded image sequences for kinematic and hydrodynamic analysis. As with C-starts, the turns can be divided into two stages (stage 1 and stage 2), based on kinematics. Stage 1 involves a bend to one side forming a C-shaped curve in the bod...
